The gamelan is a large ensemble instrument popular in southeast Asia - especially in Java and other parts of Indonesia. The National Music Museum in Vermillion is home to one of the few gamelans in the Midwest and the instrument is played there a couple of times each year. Gamelan players describe the fun and challenge of playing an instrument not very familiar to western ears.
