South Dakota Focus: Native American Youth Challenges

The challenges impacting the youth on South Dakota's Native American reservations are often far worse than the youth in other parts of the state. With an increase in gang activity substance abuse, domestic violence and teen suicides seem to be reaching alarming levels. There are many organizations working from within the state and from outside of South Dakota to try and help Native American Youth. On South Dakota Public Broadcasting's Oct. 13^th South Dakota Focus we'll zero in on some of those positive programs working to help the youth on the reservations. Guests include: representatives from Aliive Roberts County a program working with the youth in the Northeastern part of South Dakota. John Dubray a Native of the Pine Ridge Indian reservation will join us. Lori Montis with the Suicide prevention HELPLINE will share her expertise plus the Director for Behavioral Health from Indian Health Services will join us. A representative from the Front Porch Coalition will join us from Rapid City plus one young man from Illinois will share his extraordinary efforts to raise awareness of the struggles impacting Pine Ridge.
