Dakota Political Junkies, Aaron Huey and Sena Ehrhardt
Dakota Midday - 07/25/2012
Seth Tupper, editor at the Mitchell Daily Republic, and David Montgomery, reporter for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, discuss the latest political news. Discussion topics included the return of Pat Powers to the blogging world, the Kristi Noem/Matt Varilek race - fundraising and debate over the Farm Bill, and the 8th Circuit of Appeals upholding of the state's abortion suicide advisory.
Photographer Aaron Huey talks about his photos that he took on the Pine Ridge Reservation. His Pine Ridge photos are featured in the August issue of National Geographic and they provide a rare, intimate portrait of the Lakota people's resilience in the face of hardship. Huey is widely known for his 3,349 mile, solo walk across America (with his dog Cosmo). The 2002 journey lasted 154 days. Following the walk Huey took a 2 1/2 year hiatus from shooting photos to build an artist in residence program (Hueyhaus), from the ground up, on the Pecos River east of Santa Fe. His list of publications is very long and fancy. He now uses Seattle, WA, where he sits on the board of directors for the photographic non-profit Blue Earth Alliance, as a home base in between assignments.
Blues vocalist Sena Ehrhardt talks about her band and her appearance at the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Festival this coming Friday. Sena is one of the freshest and most dynamic young voices on the blues scene today. The buzz about the Minneapolis-area vocalist is poised to go nationwide as word is getting out about her incendiary performances at clubs and festivals across the upper Midwest, and people get a chance to hear her debut recording, "Leave The Light On," released last summer. Ehrhardt was born and raised in a house of blues. Through years of playing music in clubs and juke joints, her guitarist father, Ed Ehrhardt, laid the groundwork for a love of blues that eventually lead to the formation of the Sena Ehrhardt Band. Sena Ehrhardt performs Friday evening on the main stage of the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Festival beginning at 6:00.
