Decade-High Travel Numbers Expected For Memorial Day Weekend

AAA

Many Americans are going to be on the move this Memorial Day weekend. Experts say traveler numbers could reach the highest point in over a decade.

AAA projects over 39 million Americans are travelling more than 50 miles for Memorial Day. This is one million more than last year and the highest numbers since 2005. This is the third consecutive year travelling numbers are projected to see growth.

That forecast comes despite higher gas prices. More than 88% of travelers are expected to drive, with gas prices being higher than last Memorial Day.

Marilyn Buskhol is a spokesperson for AAA. She says the larger travel numbers come from increased confidence.

“You know personal incomes are up, a falling unemployment rate and the recent increases in consumer sentiment, there’s just more confidence in the economy have all helped to boost these travel numbers. You know a lot of people this first opportunity to have a nice long weekend and the temperatures are normally nice so people want to get out and enjoy time with family and friends,” says Buskhol.

Buskhol says it’s important to make sure your vehicle is well maintained and ready for a long trip. She says to be safe and limit distractions with so many people on the road.
