House lawmakers meet Tuesday morning to consider whether to impeach Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg.
This is the first time House lawmakers have considered impeachment of a constitutional officer.
The vote against the state’s top law enforcement official comes for his involvement in the death of pedestrian Joe Boever in September 2020.
Last month, a House panel recommended against impeaching Ravnsborg. The panel was assigned to investigated Ravnsborg’s conduct surrounding the fatal crash.
Several House lawmakers are upset the panel declined to hear from state Highway Patrol troopers about their crash investigation. The troopers presented the findings last week. Others say the panel was overly critical of law enforcement.
Because of the panel’s recommendation, those who support action against the attorney general must introduce articles of impeachment.
Republican Rep. Will Mortenson, of Pierre, brought articles of impeachment against Ravnsborg more than a year ago. Mortenson is circulating new draft impeachment articles to house members for review.
If impeachment makes it out of the House, it heads over to the Senate for a trial.
