Three South Dakota transit systems receive grants for propane buses

A Biden administration initiative is awarding three South Dakota communities with a grant for more propane buses.

The $1.6 million grant will be distributed between River Cities Public Transit in Pierre and Fort Pierre, Prairie Hills Transit in Spearfish and People’s Transit in Huron.

The Federal Transit Administration said the money goes toward replacing outdated buses with propane buses.

Earlier this summer, Prairie Hills Transit and People’s Transit became the first systems in South Dakota to employ the eco-friendly vehicles.

The grant comes after a push from President Biden to improve American bus systems and reduce the country’s emissions to zero by 2050.
