Sioux Falls mayor Paul TenHaken is laying out his proposed 2025 budget to the city council.
The $781 million budget includes $12 million for housing needs, 28 new full-time employee positions in the city and money for new water sources through Dakota Mainstem and Lewis and Clark.
TenHaken said the proposed budget sets the city up past 2025.
“For some, the proposed 2025 budget and the next five-year capital program may not appear to be transformational. Yet – I would argue that isn’t the case. Not only are we strengthening our daily operations and budgeting to meet the expected service delivery of our residents, we are also making strategic investments in our community’s future through land acquisition, aquatics bond payback and people," TenHaken said. "These investments are timely and thoughtful. And they prepare for us to collaborate with the community on our continue shared growth."
Another major investment would be the purchase of some land near 10th Street and Cliff Avenue using entertainment tax funds. The eight-acre land purchase is land that many believe would lead to a new convention center for the city. In the mayor's 2050 vision, the existing convention center would turn into a flexible public indoor recreation and entertainment space.
The City Council will consider the budget on Sept. 3 and 10.
