A thunderstorm with strong straight line winds tore through southern South Dakota late Monday into Tuesday morning leaving behind widespread damages.
The community of Winner was particularly hard hit. The storm caused a power outage in the town Monday night, which affected data collection for the National Weather Service. Wind speeds recorded near Winner put gusts over 80 miles per hour.
Jon Burdette is the Emergency Manager for Tripp County. He said the storm came and went fast.
“We had quite a bit of power lines go down. Lot of trees uprooted, lots of extensive damage from the winds. Businesses and homes effect. But haven’t heard of any injuries and that’s the most important part," Burdette said.”
According to the Mitchell Republic, the drive-in movie theatre, armory gymnasium, and Tripp County Museum all have serious damage.
Burdette said it’s going to be a few days to clean up and repair, but the community is coming together to work through it. The city of Winner posted on its Facebook page that the landfill is open to deposit storm debris. Officials are asking residents with trees in downed power lines to contact the city or the police department.
