The South Dakota Department of Corrections is implementing a pilot program for messaging and video visits.

Earlier this year virtual messaging was removed due to inappropriate use, according to the DOC.

The pilot program could lead to the reintroduction of messaging and video visit options for incarcerated offenders, their family and friends.

Officials are testing the program at the women’s prison in Pierre. The testing does not allow photos and messages are not instant. Approved visitors must also be registered in order to receive messages from any offenders.
