Authorities say a reported threat that led to shelter-in-place orders at two Sioux Falls schools is not credible.

Police said it began around noon Monday with a call for a well-being check on the east side of town. When officers learned the subject might be armed, nearby  Washington High School and Anne Sullivan Elementary went into shelter-in-place.

As schools were sheltered, police received a separate report about an active shooter at Washington High. Several officers responded and determined there was not a credible threat.

Police spokesperson Sam Clemens said authorities found the subject who prompted the initial well-being check later Monday afternoon and confirmed there was no threat to the public.

Clemens said there are extra officers in the area through the afternoon out of “an abundance of caution.”

The Sioux Falls School District will be in contact with Washington High and Anne Sullivan Elementary parents with information on student dismissal.
