The State Open Meeting Commission is meeting Monday (Nov. 18) in Pierre for the first time in four years.

The commission considers complaints about violations of open-meetings laws. It’s made up of State’s Attorneys appointed by Attorney General Marty Jackley.

The commission was created by the state legislature in 2004. Since then, the commission has heard 58 complaints on varying issues. Jackley announced the reformation of the committee earlier this year.

Jackley introduced Senate Bill 26 to expand commissioner membership eligibility requirements to include deputy state’s attorneys during this year’s legislative session.

Jackley calls the commission’s work “invaluable” and said it brings transparency to government proceedings.

Monday’s agenda includes six pending complaints. The meeting is happening at the Matthews Training Center in the Foss Building, located at 523 E. Capital Avenue, Pierre. Those unable to attend in-person can do so on Microsoft Teams.

Another meeting is scheduled for the following week on Nov. 25 in the same location.
