The federal government is awarding millions of dollars for two railroad projects in South Dakota.
Up to $1 million goes toward a Sioux Falls Railroad Corridor Analysis and Crossing Safety Study. The study will assess 130 crossings within the city’s Metropolitan Area.
Just under $16 million is being awarded to an I-90 Exit 46 Railroad Crossing Removal Project. That’s at Elk Creek Road.
The project creates a new bridge with a different alignment over the existing railroad.
The grants are part of the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration’s Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program.
The program’s goal is to eliminate collisions between trains and railroad users to improve safety and connectivity for local communities.
