The City of Sioux Falls is implementing an extended vehicle ordinance to create a larger drive lane on Phillips Avenue.

Starting May 1, longer vehicles, such as trucks, are prohibited from parking on Phillips Avenue starting at 9th street and extending to 13th street.

Matt Nelson is the Public Parking Manager for the City of Sioux Falls. He said there are lots of options for longer vehicles.

“The rest of downtown will be available for all vehicles, and this will affect vehicles that are probably 18 to 19 feet long on Phillips Avenue," Nelson said. "We have lots of parking downtown, again, we have over 4,000 public parking spots and over 13,000 spots when you consider public and private spots. And these 140 spaces, what we’ve restricted to shorter vehicles, are to increase traffic flow and prevent safety issues."

Starting next week, the city is painting white lines designating where a vehicle cannot extend past. Signs will be added to the spots as well.

Nelson said citations won’t be given until the start of May.
