The Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a birder's paradise.
The James River valley prairie marshes of the 21,498 acre refuge, just northeast of Aberdeen, provide breeding and resting habitat for many species of waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds and songbirds.
On a recent visit, your SDPB correspondent spotted snow goose, Eastern kingbird, great blue heron, snowy egret, great yellowlegs, white-faced ibis, Northern shoveler, yellow-headed blackbird, blue-winged teal, mallards, American pelican, brown-headed cowbird, red-winged blackbird, ring-necked pheasant of course, Western meadowlark, inlets stuffed like subway cars with grass carp, and even a mammal or two.
