Join us for a gathering and discussion about Native arts, Arts Administration and Funding. The conversation, moderated by SDPB Arts & Culture beat reporter Chynna Lockett, will begin with a national focus with Roberta Uno, a theater director and the Director of ArtChangeUS: Arts in a Changing America. The discussion will continue with a specific focus on Native arts, and how they relate locally to South Dakota and Rapid City with Lori Pourier (Oglala Lakota), President of the First Peoples Fund.
Following this conversation Autumn White Eyes will facilitate a reflective activity from the curriculum, The Power of Speaking Out { L O U D }: Building Solidarity Through Hip Hop and Spoken Word. Autumn is an arts educator and spoken word artist. This curriculum was co-developed with her colleagues, James An, Maria (MK) Kirigin, and Vic Quintanar as a Harvard Graduate School of Education project. Autumn is Executive Director of Lakota Children’s Enrichment, a dynamic Pine Ridge-based nonprofit organization. Her goal is to help Lakota youth find their own voices—and to empower them to become leaders, in their community and in the world.
This event takes place Wednesday, August 1 at 8:00 a.m. in the South Dakota Community Foundation Gallery of the SDPB Black Hills Bureau, 415 Main St., Rapid City. The event is open to the public, and will be webcast on SDPB.org and the SDNet app.
ArtChangeUS: Arts in a Changing America is an initiative based out of the California Institute of the Arts. Their mission is to reframe the national arts conversation by embracing the cultural assets of demographic change.
