Where Do We Go From Here? takes place in the South Dakota Community Foundation Gallery at the SDPB Black Hills Studio, 415 Main Street, Rapid City. Bring your brown bag lunch and join in the open-forum discussion.
The group of journalists will explore the 2018 One Book South Dakota- Thomas E. Patterson's "Informing the News." One Book South Dakota is a project of the South Dakota Humanities Council.
As the journalist Walter Lippmann noted nearly a century ago, democracy falters “if there is no steady supply of trustworthy and relevant news.” Today’s journalists are not providing it. Patterson proposes “knowledge-based journalism” as a corrective. Unless journalists are more deeply informed about the subjects they cover, they will continue to misinterpret them and to be vulnerable to manipulation by their sources. Patterson calls for nothing less than a major overhaul of journalism practice and education. This book speaks not only to journalists, but to all who are concerned about the integrity of the information on which America’s democracy depends.
In an age when we seem to be surrounded by complicated and contentious issues, too often we’re resigned to agree-to-disagree. Where Do We Go from Here? is a monthly get-together at the SDPB Black Hills Studio to share thoughts on big questions of local and national concern, listen to dissenting points of view, and propose solutions.
The event is free and open to everyone. If you can’t join us in person, watch online at SDPB.org.
