Dahl Takes Art Into The Streets

The Dahl Arts Center in downtown Rapid City is taking art outside this weekend.

The Urban Art Festival at the Dahl called “Art Inside Out” encourages everyday citizens to get involved in the creative process.

SDPB’s Charles Michael Ray has more.

Emma Rivers is the Marketing Coordinator at the Rapid City Arts Council.    Rivers says one goal of this event is to get people to re-think their connection to art by taking part in it, rather than just viewing it.

“We want to get people involved – you know a lot of time they come to the Dahl and they see art work on the walls.  But we want them to be able to create the artwork and not just look at it on the walls,” says Rivers.

Rivers says creating art can help one to appreciate it in new ways.  She says event is geared for both kids and adults.  She says it includes hands-on activities from a community sculpture project to a graffiti art mural all with the support of experienced artists on hand.

As part of the festival, also includes the first annual Urban Plein Air Competition. The one-day event asks artists to capture their favorite location(s) in Rapid City.  The event ends with a wet sale, and awards announcement.

You can find out more at the Dahl's website for the event here.
