When English travel writer Fraser Harrison first visited Yankton in May 2011, he wasn’t impressed. His guide book promised a "gem-like historic town," but he was instead disappointed by what seemed to be a rather moribund community.
In his book, Infinite West: Travels in South Dakota, Harrison dismissed Yankton as a city with a “forlorn and abandoned air.” He never expected to return, but he was back in Yankton last year for a longer visit and had to eat his words. He’s written an essay about Yankton for the spring issue of the quarterly journal, South Dakota History. He describes the piece as an act of atonement and a prolonged thank-you letter to the city he came to love.
