Throughout July in Spearfish, the Matthews Opera House in staging the original musical, Deadeye’s Wild West – or Subterfuge in Spearfish. It takes place around 1903 and tells the story of a young singer from the Black Hills who wants to join a traveling Wild West show that comes through town.
Deadeye’s Wild West was written by Paul Higbee. The music is by Spearfish composer and performer Scott Simpson. He’s released over a dozen independently-produced albums and composed music for several films. It’s long been a dream of his to compose a musical for the stage.
Simpson bought his guitar with him to the SDPB Radio studios at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City and shared a couple songs from Deadeye’s Wild West with Dakota Midday listeners.
