Since 1922, Yankton's WNAX radio has broadcast throughout the upper Great Plains with a signal that can reach as far south as Kansas City and as far north as Fargo. During the station’s early days, WNAX was an important connection to the outside world for isolated farm and ranch families throughout the region. There was live music from Lawrence Welk and recipes and household tips from Wynne Speece, “The Neighbor Lady,” who was on the air from 1939 through 2005.
After being purchased by Gurney’s Seed and Nursery Company in 1926, the station became known as “WNAX – Voice of the House of Gurney in Yankton” and made Gurney’s a household name.
Over the past four decades, Jerry Oster has been a familiar voice to WNAX listeners. He’s the station’s news director and covers SDSU Jackrabbit football. He joined the program to share more about the history of the pioneering radio station.
