The Red Cloud Indian School’s Heritage Center is hosting an art exhibit by world-renowned Lakota artist Arthur Amiotte as part of its celebration of Native American Heritage Month.
Amiotte’s 55 pieces on display represent 26 years work.
Arthur Amiotte was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation…just a short drive from the Red Cloud Indian School. His attendance at a workshop given by legendary Dakota artist Oscar Howe changed his life and set Amiotte on a career path into art that’s lasted for more than half a century.
Mary Maxon is curator of The Heritage Center. She says having the opportunity to host Amiotte’s traveling exhibition of collages is an honor as well as a fantastic opportunity for any art lovers in the area.
“Arthur…he’s probably one of the most prominent Native artists in the United States working today,” explains Maxon. “It’s really interesting to have this in Pine Ridge because this is kind of where it started. Arthur’s Oglala…and so a lot of his work references his history, his ancestors, Native artists…it’s…quite a lot of depth to it.”
The exhibit of Arthur Amiotte’s collages runs through December 15. A special reception with the artist is being held this Saturday afternoon, during which time Amiotte will lead a tour of his work.
