Matuto's infectious music finds a unique place where Brazilian rhythms meet Appalachian fiddle tunes. There are also healthy doses of jazz, blues, rock, Cajun and other influences. The musicians in the New York City-based band follow their ears to wherever they may lead.
In 2002, Matuto co-founder and guitarist Clay Ross, embarked on a musical odyssey that brought him closer to home. The South Carolina native moved to New York to pursue a jazz career and several years later found himself in Recife, Brazil studying the region's folkloric music. After Ross met accordionist Ron Curto, the two musicians began exploring a shared musical vision and set about combining their individual repertoires into an extensive library of Pan-American influences. Focusing their talents, resources, and experience Ross and Curto established Matuto as a band.
Matuto is coming to Spearfish on Friday for a 7 pm performance at the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center. Clay Ross joined Dakota Midday and discussed his band's music.
