Dakota Midday: Bad Art Press

South Dakota is well known for its Native Art. The success of businesses like Prairie Edge in downtown Rapid City is a good example. But what is the boundary between something that’s considered Native Art and something that is just art?

Michael and Douglass Two Bulls are two Lakota artists involved in the Bad Art Press project in Rapid City. Both studied art in Santa Fe, New Mexico before returning to South Dakota to start “Bad Art Press.”  Their efforts include not only visual arts, with multi-layered colors in screen printed images, but also music. They’re planning a CD release in the next year. They won a 2015 Artist and Business Leadership fellowship from the First People’s Fund.

During a visit to the Bad Art Press studio, Michael and Douglass Two Bulls discussed their process of creation and the boundary between being categorized as a Native Artist or as just an artist.
