Kathy Kosins grew up in Detroit during the golden era of Motown. Her father owned a high-end clothing store and outfitted Motown stars such as Marvin Gaye and the Miracles. She grew up listening to soul and rhythm and blues, but didn't start singing until she was 20.
In the early 1980s she sang and arranged background vocals for producer Don Was of the band Was (Not Was). About a decade later she fell in love with the freedom of jazz and since then has established a reputation as one of today’s premiere jazz vocalists. Instead of relying on familiar standards, her repertoire features original songs and little-known gems.
Kosins performs on Friday, April 10 for the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society's final concert of the season at the Orpheum Theatre. She joined Dakota Midday and discussed her career and upcoming album of rhythm and blues songs.
