When the United Nations was born in November of 1945, it didn’t have a home. Rapid City businessman Paul Bellamy thought the Black Hills would be the ideal place for world delegates to deliberate in peace and quiet. He even flew to war-torn London to make his case for making the Black Hills the Capitol of the World.
Although Rapid City was one of five finalists, prime real estate in Manhattan donated by the Rockefeller family was ultimately chosen for UN Headquarters. Two decades later in 1965, the valley near Rapid City Bellamy proposed for the UN became the home of Reptile Gardens.
Retired Rapid City judge Marshall Young is Paul Bellamy’s grandson. He joined Dakota Midday and discussed his grandfather's dream of the United Nations in the Black Hills.
