Dakota Midday: New Domes Installed At Corn Palace

Mitchell Corn Palace

The three new domes are up at the Mitchell Corn Palace. The new, onion-shaped domes were installed last Monday. The domes, along with new decorative turrets, are part of a $7.2 million renovation of the iconic South Dakota landmark.

Mitchell’s first corn palace was built in 1892. The current building dates back to 1921. Renovations began in June of 2014. The upgrade also includes new lighting, larger murals, exhibit space, a theater and a walk-out balcony above the marquee. Corn Palace director Dan Sabers says he's happy to have the domes up in time for the Corn Palace Festival, which begins on August 26.

Sabers joined Dakota Midday and discussed the progress of the Corn Palace renovations.
