Regional Health Seeking Submissions for Breast Cancer Mural in Art Alley

Regional Health

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. For the second year in a row Regional Health is seeking artist submissions for a mural to mark National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. A 10-by-14-foot space in Art Alley in Rapid City has been selected for the mural.

Dustin Hirsch is the outreach liaison with Regional Health. He says public art is a good way to reach a wide audience.

“Art Alley is so integral to our community and gets so much attention not only from local community members but also from tourism. It’s downtown Rapid City.”

Hirsch says last year’s mural received even more attention than expected.

“Last year when we did it, we thought the mural would only be up through the month of October. But it ended up being so popular with people taking selfies and pictures with it and what-not. And getting social media attention that the Art Alley committee decided to keep it up all year.”

Hirsch says South Dakota artists of any level are welcome to submit a design proposal. Regional Health will post finalists on Facebook for a popular vote to determine the winning image. The grand prize includes $500, plus $150 for supplies.

Emailed submissions are due by September 9th. Artists can search for details on Regional Health’s website.
