In The Moment … May 6, 2020 Show 811 Hour 1
Historian, author, and professor John Miller has died. He was known as the leading South Dakota historian and beloved by many students who have flooded the internet with memories and tributes. We spend time today remembering John Miller.
First we welcome his friend, co-author, and colleague Jon Lauck. Jon Lauck is a senior aide to U.S. Sen. John Thune, an adjunct professor of history and political science at the University of South Dakota, founding president of the Midwestern History Association, associate editor of the Middle West Review and author of several books, including The Lost Region: Toward a Revival of Midwestern History.
Then, as we reflect on his passing here at South Dakota Public Broadcasting, one interview, in particular, comes to mind. He joined In the Moment to talk about his book "Democracy and the Informed Citizen." This was in 2018 -- Before the impeachment of President Trump, before COVID-19. He talked about how to separate truth from falsehoods, about how America might not be as exceptional as we sometimes think we are. His words resonate today. So , we alson bring you some of that interview.
