Terry Liggins

This interview is from SDPB's daily public-affairs show, In the Moment, hosted by Lori Walsh.

Terry Liggins has been a standout athlete at the University of South Dakota. He's also been incarcerated. After serving his time and struggling to rejoin society, Liggins decided to look back at how he ended up in prison. He wasn't searching for excuses. He was searching for healing.

Liggins learned about "adverse childhood effects," and though working through trauma and neglect from childhood goes far beyond taking an online quiz, the screening tool helped him find a path for his own self-discovery. How had bad things that happened to him in childhood impacted his behavior — or even his brain chemistry?

Now Liggins has gone from a volunteer at the Community Response to Child Abuse conference to one of its keynote speakers. The conference aims to bring together community advocates, medical professionals, law enforcement officers, educators, and social workers in order to shatter the societal stigma of talking about child abuse and create a safer South Dakota for all children.
