Flood risk remains low along most of South Dakota rivers and lakes

Recent snowfall has done little to change the flood outlook in South Dakota. Most of the state faces a below normal chance of flooding along rivers and lakes.

The exceptions are Spink and Brown counties in the James River basin where minor to moderate flooding is expected. That's due to snowpack in North Dakota.

Kelly Serr is Warning Coordinator with the National Weather Service in Aberdeen. She says March in South Dakota can usher in a shift in flooding fortunes.

"The next two weeks — that takes us out through March 9 — the trends continue to be below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation," Serr says. "That's something we're going to keep a close eye on because any additional precipitation into the system could have an impact on these flood outlooks."

Areas along the Big Sioux River are also looking at minor to moderate flooding. The next flood outlook is released in early March.
