Former governor Dennis Daugaard is among 10 South Dakotans who will join the South Dakota Hall of Fame. He is the first governor to receive the honor since Bill Janklow's induction in 2013.
A press release from the South Dakota Hall of Fame characterized Daugaard as a “servant leader,” highlighting his work in state politics and with the Children’s Home Society of South Dakota. Daugaard left a career in banking to join the nonprofit in 1990.
“I helped them strengthen their finances and expand their programs,” Daugaard said. “I spent quite a bit of time raising money for them, and then as executive director in the last nine years I was with them.”
Daugaard began his political career as a state senator in 1996, and then served as lieutenant governor to Mike Rounds. He took office in 2011, inheriting a state reeling from the 2008 recession.
Other 2022 Hall of Fame inductees include former South Dakota Secretary of State Shantel Krebs, former Argus Leader editor Randell Beck and geoscientist Paul Gnirk. The full list can be found at the South Dakota Hall of Fame website.
