Photographing Native Americans with Shane Balkowitsch

This interview posted above is from SDPB's daily public-affairs show, In the Moment, hosted by Lori Walsh.

Shane Balkowitsch considers himself an "image maker" more than a photographer. The first personal camera he owned was a wet plate camera.

Since beginning working in the historic photographic medium, Balkowitsch has make high-profile images of boxer Evander Holyfield, Swedish environmentalist Greta Thunberg, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, musician John Batiste, and Canadian conservative author Jordan Peterson.

His wet plate exhibition at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City is open until August 6. It's an gathering of images of Northern Plains Native Americans, and it evokes the tradition of photographers such as Edward Curtis.

He joins Lori Walsh on In the Moment to discuss the iconography which informs his work.
