This interview posted above is from SDPB's daily public-affairs show, In the Moment, hosted by Lori Walsh.

Oscar Howe is one of the 20th century's most innovative painters. His art was undeniably modern while being firmly rooted in Očhéthi Šakówiŋ culture and aesthetic.

He was named artist laureate of South Dakota in 1960.

A retrospective exhibition called "Dakota Modern: The Art of Oscar Howe" is on display now at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in New York. One year from today, June 10, 2023, the exhibit will open at the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings.

Kathleen Ash-Milby is Portland Art Museum's curator of Native American art and curator of "Dakota Modern." She joins Lori Walsh on the phone from Portland.
