The South Dakota State Poetry Society has forwarded their recommendation for a new poet laureate to Governor Kristi Noem's office.
According to state law, the poet laureate is appointed by the governor, but only after the poetry society has recommended a candidate. It's a non-political post. The state's first poet laureate was, famously, Badger Clark.
