The only siblings in the 2023 South Dakota All-State Band, Davis and Brooks Boon, are well-practiced percussionists.
Whether creating thunderous booms on the timpani drums, tapping the triangle, or crushing the crash cymbals, this dynamic duo makes their presence known throughout the concert hall. During our interview, they told me the secret to their success is many, many hours of practice. While active in the band at Sioux Falls Christian, they also compete on a world-class level with the Groove Pursuit drumline. Giving credit to their instructor, Pete Hansen, founder of Groove Inc. in Sioux Falls, Davis says, “Without him, we wouldn’t be this good and we wouldn’t progress at all.”
However, music runs in the Boon’s blood, and they are quick to give credit to their family. Younger brother, Brooks says, “Thanks to our parents for paying for our lessons, without that we wouldn’t be able to learn from Pete.” But, their parents have tough competition for who is their number one fan. “Our grandma loves that we are in All-State.” Brooks continues, “She grew up being a musician. Now that we are too, so she loves coming to see us at any competition we have.”
While both Boon brothers plan to continue playing in various types of bands in the future and beyond high school, they both appreciate being on the same stage one last time before Davis graduates this spring. “I just really enjoy becoming a better musician because of my brother,” Brooks says, “and I’m just glad to be here performing with other musicians and other people who work hard.”
