The city of Sioux Falls is offering artists a chance to help paint storm drains to raise awareness of water pollution.

Jose Alvarez is a City Environmental Analyst for Sioux Falls. He said the goal of the storm drain project is to educate people on the connection between storm water runoff and the Big Sioux River.

“The city of Sioux Fall’s storm drain system plays a vital role in public safety by quickly collecting and conveying water for precipitation events before it can accumulate and cause flooding," said Alvarez. "Unfortunately, any pollutants that water encounters will move through that system and be discharged into the Big Sioux River without treatment.”

The project aims to select artist to paint eight storm drain murals across downtown Sioux Falls.

Alvarez said artist interested in applying must follow guidelines.

“Winning artists will be selected by Sioux Falls and the arts commission so the design will be submitted, and winners will be notified. We want an eight and a half by eleven image for the proposed artwork that includes messaging,” said Alvarez.

Winning artist will be awarded $200 dollars. The city provides supplies for the project.

Artist interested in applying have until May 3 to apply.
