South Dakota State Fair officials want you to decorate their trash cans in their "Trash to Treasure" contest.

Trash cans are available for pick-up now through Aug. 9 from the State Fair office in Huron.

Judges will evaluate the cans at the State Fair on Aug. 30. The top three winners receive cash prizes.

“This is a fun way to brighten up the fairgrounds and keep our trash cans looking great, said State Fair Manager Peggy Besch. “We want people to have fun with it and are looking forward to seeing what participants come up with.”

For the best chances to win, officials say to use visual appeal and creativity to paint the cans with fair related, 4-H, Future Farmers of America, or agriculture themes.

They'll accept group or individual registrations. Learn more about the rules and find the registration form here.

This year’s state fair runs from Aug. 28 through Sept. 2.
