South Dakota fantasy artist Hope Christofferson is celebrating the release of her new publication "Loreland Bestiary: An Illustrated Mythology of the World’s Most Fantastical Creatures."
"Loreland" chronicles dragons, mermaids, fairies and other enchanted beasts through Christofferson's intricate watercolor illustrations.
"Watercolor is something that people like James Audubon and naturalist illustrators used to very accurately capture the details of exotic plants and species before we had photography," said Christofferson. "So I thought it would be the perfect medium to pay homage and give respect to these quite fantastical, almost forgotten creatures of old.
"Loreland" was released in November and has made its way onto the shelves of major retailers like Target, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million.
"I hope the book will inspire readers to see the wonder in the world, to see how big it is and how mysterious it is, and how it's waiting for anyone to step out," said Christofferson. "That's what I hope, is it sparks some wonder."
Christofferson is holding a book signing for "Loreland" on Dec. 21 from 2 to 4 pm at Peace At Last plant shop in Rapid City.
