Senate Again Rejects Oceti Sakowin Community-Based Schools

Class

State senators have once again rejected a bill to create community-based schools centered on Native American curriculum. Senate Bill 68 failed earlier this week but was revived in a procedural move.

Supporters say more culturally relevant education could improve high school graduation rates for Native students. Opponents say some districts can already provide that experience through immersion schools. They also worry the move would divert funds from public schools.

Senator Troy Heinert—a Democrat from Mission—sponsored the bill. He says school districts have been slow to respond to an issue that’s existed for decades

“Well, we kept hearing schools could do it now. Well, they better be ready, cause we’re going to be there. And we’re going to say, ‘It’s time. You said you can. Let’s go.’”

A similar bill received unanimous support in the Senate last year before dying in a House committee.
