Lance Christensen Jr of Little Wound, who will start his senior year of school later this month, finished the National High School Golf Invitational event on Wednesday tied for 133rd place out of 250 boy participants at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. Christensen finished the three-day event with a score of +29.
This annual golf extravaganza features some of the best high school golfers in the nation.
Last fall as a junior, Christensen entered the spotlight by winning the boys ‘A’ golf title.
Christensen’s just the second student-athlete from a reservation school to win an individual state golf championship in South Dakota history. He is the first to do it from the Pine Ridge Reservation. Corey Jensen of Todd County won an individual title in 1998 from the Rosebud reservation.
Along with Christensen, South Dakota had two other high school golfers represented at the event. Landon Moe of Yankton finished the event tied for 172nd place at +39 and Jacob Stewart from O’Gorman scored +44, which placed him at 185. Just to be invited to the national high school invitational is considered an honor to many. The competition at the event is some of the best you will find at the high school level in the United States.
High school boys golf programs (AA and A) in South Dakota will start practice on Monday August 10th with the competitive season starting as early as Saturday August 15th for some. The state meets will take place October 5th and 6th with the AA boys in Sioux Falls and A boys in Hot Springs.
