National Hall of Fame to Induct Rob Van Laecken

Legendary South Dakota high school basketball coach Rob Van Laecken will be inducted into the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame this week.

Laecken is the winningest high school girls’ basketball coach in South Dakota history with a total of 595 total wins.

He spent 37-seasons with Parkston, leading them to 34 winning seasons, which included ten state tournament appearances.

In 2012, Laecken's last trip with Parkston to the state tournament, the Trojans finished second - falling to St. Thomas More 70-51 in the Class A State Championship game.

Laeken retired from coaching in 2014, but is still renowned as one of the best basketball minds the Mt. Rushmore state has ever seen.

He’ll be inducted into the National Coaches Hall of Fame on Tuesday at a luncheon in Sioux Falls.

Nate Wek is currently the sports content producer and sports and rec beat reporter for South Dakota Public Broadcasting. He is a graduate of South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism Broadcasting and a minor in Leadership. From 2010-2013 Nate was the Director of Gameday Media for the Sioux Falls Storm (Indoor Football League) football team. He also spent 2012 and 2013 as the News and Sports Director of KSDJ Radio in Brookings, SD. Nate, his wife Sarah, and three sons, Braxan, Jordy, and Anders live in Canton, SD.
