As the 2019 South Dakota high school football championships grow near, fourteen teams have their eyes set on one goal – a state title. For the Pierre Governors squad, this season has been historic.
Since the beginning of football practices in August, many sports experts in the state have had high hopes for the Governors. So far, Pierre has been on point by going undefeated during the regular season, and then winning in the playoffs to make it to the 11AA state championship game.
Last Friday night, Pierre topped Mitchell 57-7 in the semifinal round. Not only did their victory over the Kernels punch their ticket to Brookings, but it also broke the record for most points scored in a season by a high school football team in South Dakota with 678. The previous record of 676 points was set by Jefferson high school in 1967 – 52 years ago.
The Pierre Governors have also set a number of school records, which includes rushing yards in season, total yards in a season, and passing touchdowns in a season. Garrett Stout also set the Pierre school record in 2019 for most passing touchdowns for a career with 57.
Pierre’s state record though of 678 points in a season was made possible by some big-time wins.
The Governors had four games during the regular season where they eclipsed the 60-point mark. In the post-season, they put up 103-points against Spearfish.
On Friday, Pierre will face Brookings for the 11AA state title at 12 pm CT. These two teams met during the regular season where the Governors were victorious 54-6.
