The South Dakota Department of Transportation has been awarded a Rebuilding America Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant.
The $22 million grant will go to the Freight Capacity Expansion Project to upgrade a rail line between Fort Pierre and Rapid City. The total cost is an estimated $84 million, with $20 million coming from the state of South Dakota, and $42 million from the Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad company.
The project will replace 87.7 miles of aging rail, upgrade 121 bridge structures, install 80,000 main line cross ties, replaces 11 main line turnouts, upgrade 122 grade crossings, and install safety improvements on the line.
RAISE funding has been awarded to 90 projects in 47 states, the District of Columbia and Guam.
