The U.S. Department of Transportation is awarding more than $10 million in Tribal Transit Grants to 36 tribes in rural areas.

The money will be used for projects that improve and support transit services to meet the unique needs of their members. The funding comes from the department’s Tribal Transit Program.

South Dakota is getting a total $890,981 under the 2021 Tribal Transit Program. Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate will receive $342,981 to install video cameras on its existing fleet of vehicles to enhance operator and passenger safety.

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe is getting $548,000 to purchase new transit vehicles and address repair needs.

An additional $229 million will be available for public transportation on reservations over a five-year period under the bipartisan infrastructure law signed by President Biden Last year.
