The price of gasoline is declining in South Dakota as Thanksgiving approaches, though it remains higher than this time last year.
The average cost for a gallon of gas fell three cents to $3.56 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. That's 15 cents lower than a month ago, but it's up nearly 30 cents year-to-year.
Nationwide, the average price fell two cents to $3.76. Gas Budy petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan said the decline was driven by an improvement in the refining situation and lower crude oil prices.
"With oil prices remaining volatile, the outlook is murky, but I'm hopeful in the lead up to Thanksgiving we'll see prices declining in more states, while others may not be quite as lucky,' De Haan said. "Regardless, we'll still be seeing the most expensive Thanksgiving Day prices on record."
GasBuddy surveys more than 600 gas stations in South Dakota and nearly 150,000 stations nationwide to inform its analysis, according to De Haan.
