The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $4 million to housing authorities in South Dakota.

The Crow Creek and Oglala Lakota Housing Authorities each received $2 million as a result of the Indian Community Development Block Grant.

Between them, the plan for the money is to repair 114 housing units and build five new facilities to improve conditions for lower-income tribal members, according to a HUD statement.

HUD released funding through the ICDBG to 55 communities across the nation amounting to a total just over $95 million. Officials announced the funding Tuesday.

“The funding announced today will help make tribal communities safer, healthier, and help families thrive,” said HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge.

Money from the grant can be used to finance repairs to houses, community-use buildings, plumbing facilities, and roads as well as land acquisition opportunities.
