The Department of Social Services is highlighting a program designed to get more Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to focus on healthier options.
It's called the Double-Up program, and it's run by SDSU Extension. Lawmakers discussed the program at the latest Government Operations and Audit Committee meeting.
Chief of Children and Family Services Alex Mayer said it matches up to $20 spent on fresh produce at participating retailers.
“So, if someone were to purchase $20 in fresh fruits and vegetables, they get an additional $20," Mayer said. "That is facilitated through a voucher, coupon program with the specific retailer that is a part of that program.”
There are seven participating stores throughout the state. The list includes the Buche Foods locations in Wagner, Gregory, Mission, Pine Ridge, Oacoma and Sisseton. Locations grant a voucher up to $20 per each store visit.
