Rapid City’s downtown is amid a major update with the construction of Block 5. One year from completion, six of 10 floors have been framed.
Construction continues daily on what will be the second-tallest building in Rapid City.
Jake Quasney is chief operating officer at Lloyd Companies, the construction firm behind the development.
“If you’re down there by the site, the windows are in on the hotel part of the project and even on fifth floor," Quasney said. "The teams’ done a great job on making progress down there, tracking toward opening up there next April.”
This comes after a technical error caused the elevator shaft to buckle in late November. Despite the brief collapse concern, Quasney said it wasn’t a major setback.
“It was really just a matter of a few days, and our team had everything back on track," Quasney said. "I told people, if it had happened in a cornfield and that product had failed, they certainly wouldn’t have even told me about it, but when it happens in downtown and you’re dealing with the potential of so many people around we needed to make sure and notify people and do the right thing – just in case.”
Quasney said while the community has invested in downtown, this development will add to the community once ready for prime time.
“Bringing a different level of downtown living with the number of units we’re able to bring into the area will bring that much more disposable income into downtown,” Quasney said.
Construction on Block 5 continues each day and is expected to be finished in mid-2025.
