The South Dakota Lottery Commission is being praised for growth. The commission met recently for its June meeting.

Meghan Kiss is the Vice President of Scientific Games. She said South Dakota’s numbers are among the best in the country.

“Every single year, with the exception of last year, you guys were tied with the U.S. South Dakota grows at a faster rate than the United States lottery industry does grow,” Kiss said.

She credits a big portion of this to the way South Dakota has handled the instant ticket business.

“I think the way that they look at growth is very strategic, it’s very practical. I’m not saying that sometimes lotteries don’t necessarily go through the motions to look at everything. But sometimes it really does take a strategy, a long-term strategy. And I feel like South Dakota’s done a very good job focusing on the instant ticket business,” Kiss said.

The United States was negative in instant ticket sales in 2023. South Dakota was up nearly 3% in the same metric. The state was one of 11 in the country to end the year positive.
