USDA awarding Newell butcher shop grant money

A South Dakota butcher shop us receiving over $5.5 million in grant money from the USDA.

Midwestern Meat Locker in Newell is a butcher shop that harvests, processes and further processes cattle, hogs, sheep and bison for local producers.

The award will go towards purchasing land to construct and equip a new facility. The building it currently operates in was built in 1911.

The grant is also creating five new full-time jobs and the shop’s capacity by 300%.

The award comes from the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program. This is a part of a Biden Administration-led initiative to improve the U.S. agricultural system.

Jackson Dircks is a Freeburg, Illinois, native. He is pursuing a degree in English, Journalism and Secondary Education at Augustana University and planning to graduate in May 2025. He plans to pursue a career in sports journalism.
